Gallerie d'Arte Moderne e Le Bianche Notte

Yesterday was a very fun day...

It started early with Sarah and me going to the photo development place near the Vatican to drop off my film. The website said they were open every day, however once we got all the way there the sign said Mon-Fri. So I am just going to have to do that after my photograph class on Monday- oh well. Sarah and I took the bus back towards school where we were going to meet the Culture Club (oh ya- we all joined this club) to go the museum. We got there early though so we just went to a bar across the street and got a cappucino and split a chocolate cornetto!

We met Lindsay, Leah and the rest of the group a little bit later to catch the bus to the Gallerie Nazionale d'Arte Moderne (National Gallery of Modern Art). It was an amazing gallery with modern art.
We spent 3 hours there and Emily (the president of culture club) somehow got is in for free- which was awesome! I got to see art by a lot of names I recognized: Polluck, Kadinsky, Marinetti, Monet, Picasso, and Twombly; and then of course a lot of other ones I didn't know. I will try to put up pics on Facebook soon.

We decided to break off from the group and head back ourselves so that we could eat and rest up for Le Bianche Notte! We took the bus to the Centro in order to catch the tram. But first we took a much needed food break...I got Potato Pizza :) After getting off of the tram we went to SMA to buy food for dinner. Then we finally walked back up to our apartment and crashed...I slept from 5-7...which is a very long nap for me! When we woke up we made and ate dinner: prosciutto and melon, cheese, tortilini w/ spicy sauce, sausage, and dipping bread. Then we got ready to hit the town!

Le Bianche Notte is a once a year festival that takes place in September under a full moon. (Unfortunetly is was quite overcast so we really couldn't see the moon...but it didn't rain!) But its a night where shops, restaurants, and bars stay open all night; transportation runs all night; and certain piazzas have concert venues. We headed to the Pantheon first and we just sat around the fountain in front to take everything in: sounds, people, smells, etc. It was packed- there were people everywhere! From there we went to Piazza Nuvona. There were local artists who were selling there work and a tango music concert! We pretty much just walked around the whole night, sometimes we knew where we were and other times we had no clue. So we just walked until we got back to something familiar. From Piazza Nuvona we went to the Colesseum (mainly in search of public restrooms, which were closed!); then to a bar for a bathroom and gelato break (!); then the Trevi Fountain and then back to Pantheon. We pretty much did one huge figure eight around the city. But it was such a nice night (its finally getting cooler) so it was a good time be out. We didn't get back to our apartment till a lil' past 3am. So a good day, but a long one!

I slept in a little this morning and had some breakfast. But now I need to start my drawing homework - my self-portrait :( So we'll see if it ends up looking anything like me!

San Pietra and such

So this morning we went to campus at 11am for a Barbeque and club sign up- we all signed up for the cultural club...whoo hoo! From there we got the bus to the Vatican. It really was not that long of ride and we actually had walked a lot of it in the day(s) before so it was great to recognize a lot of the area.

It was amazing walking up towards St. Peters...from the main street, before entering the Piazza, it looks so small and so close. But this is thanks to Bernini who through his curving collonade, successfully created many optical illusions, and this is one of them. So as you walk closer to the front is definetly becomes larger, but without anything (like a person) to compare scale to, it would be extremely easy to think that the columns are only 20 feet tall whereas they are well over 100 (It may be way more, but I'm not sure off the top of my head). Another optical illusion is that when you stand at the center, near the obelisk, the curving collonade, appears to be straight, because all of the (four rows) of columns line up exactly. Which makes it seem like there is just one long straight wall of single columns...crazy! (And to think this is before 'technology')

Once we got inside (after going through security and bringing a scarf along to cover my shoulders!) it was yet again breathtaking. A photo will never ever do it justice. It is absolutly huge and still hard to comprehend.

After walking around in awe, both inside and out, we headed outside San Pietro to walk around the neighborhood. We actually walked quite far and made it to a bridge (the first bridge ever built to cross the Tiber river) and crossed to the other side en route to the Spanish Steps. We casually walked through small side streets and actually first stumbled upon a Richard Meier building, definetly looks out of place, but I suppose it has a certain beauty in its own right. But because it is super contemporary is it the object of much hatred for the Romans.

We finally got to the Spanish steps and by this time we were starving...so we climbed quickly in order to find some gelato!!! I picked three flavors: melone, fragola, e mango....Melon, strawberry and mango. amazing! From here we continued to walk back down towards the tram station...which actually was quite a walk...but we got to pass the Pantheon on our way again so that was great! (Third time in three days!) So we just took the tram back to our street and before getting to our apartment we stopped at a Pizzeria across the street, where Lindsay and Sarah did an excellent job of ordering a pizza with eggplant, zucchini, and spinach for only 5 euro! It was actually quite small and we would have easily ordered a second if we knew how much it would cost!! We definetly worked up a well deserved appetite from walking (again) all day long!

As I mentioned yesterday tommorrow we are doing a Wall Walk with Prof. Kirk...we have to meet at school at 10am and we probably won't be back till 6 or 7 pm! We can't wait! It's going to be the most educational hike I have ever been on. (too bad I didn't bring my 'water backpack' hehee)

Oh yes and please check out my roomate, Leah's, photos at
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lkacanda. She has posted quite a few and she will continue to update- so check often!

Is this for real?

This is definetly a question we have all been asking ourselves...especially because it still does not seem like a reality that we are here. I was talking with my roomates today as we are continuing to realize that this is not a vacation...we don't have to just rush around 'le colesseo', take some pictures and leave. No! We can come back as the seasons change, we can sit there all day and sketch, we can visit it as much as we want. It's just crazy.

We have been on our feet constantly- yesterday we explored our neighborhood, Monte Verde, for a few hours and then some of the Grad students from AUR took us on public transportation...bus and tram...to the bottom of the hill. From our area/school, we are on the top of a hill, on the other side of the Tiber river from center city. But we have gorgeous views of the entire cityscape as well the mountains that surround Roma. So...from there we decided to take the tram further into the center and walk around.

It is totally beyond words. I can't even describe to you how I felt as we walked through small winding streets and then all of the sudden we saw the back of the Pantheon. It was such an emotional and spiritual experience.

Wow!

From there we got our first gelato and walked toward the Colesseum, on the way we saw so many other amazing sites. It's really all quite impossible for me to put into words. It's just awesome to know that buildings, history, culture, etc that I have studied since high school (Humanities! oh my!) are right in front of me.

Today was amazing as well...For lunch Sarah and went to find a bar in our neighborhood to buy a sandwich/panini. Oh yes and a bar here serves cappucinos, espresso, pasteries, sandwiches, gelato, etc. So anyway we found just up our street a bit (there are many around though, we just decided on this one) and we met a Canadian women there who is doing grad work at AUR and who is dating an Italian man, whose family owns this cafe. It was really awesome just to sit down and talk with her, she is studying art history and we just had great conversations about studying in Roma, language, culture, etc. Her boyfriend is in the process of learning english so she was glad that we could practice language with him as well. It will be nice to be familiar with a Cafe that is on the way to campus...Because most Italians make it a daily practice to get a cappucino on their way to work ;)

Another awesome thing that we did today was that we got to go on a professor guided tour with Professor Kirk (our new best friend!). He is wonderfull and he knows so much about the city. He took us from Piazza Navona, to the Pantheon (and I was so glad I had already seen it the day before), to Trevi Fountain, to the Capital Building, to the Roman Forum (ruins), and the the Colesseum. He is so animated and knowledgable. I also had my first bar experience with P. Kirk...we got a Cappucino freddo...iced coffe! Delicious! He is giving another tour on Sunday- it's an 8 hour walking tour around the entire outside wall of the city...We can't wait!

Well I could easily go on and on about so much...just new experiences, the culture, the language, the people, the architecture, the weather, the crazy drivers, the food...it's all just amazing! But there's just not enough time...oh my!

Oh and I just tried to add some pics but my internet is a lil' touch and go here, but I will try to put some up soon!
